Learning From Home

To assist in supporting your childen with their learning from home during these uncertain times, we have designed a homework style activity sheet for students to complete which supports their learning and provides you with some ideas of activities to keep your children engaged.

We will provide an updated sheet each week to support your child from home.
Click on the link below for week 9 homework

I have also added links to our end of year standards that were handed out at our parent information session earlier in the term. These are end of year targets for each child. The phonics continuum includes the blend sounds that will be of focus next term. All sight words have also been included so you can move on with new words as your child is ready.

We are also working hard to plan and prepare lessons in a suitable format that parents will be able to support from home in the event of a school closure. Please keep up to date with the blog for updates. If any parents do not have access to internet at home, please contact us so that we can make alternative arrangements where necessary.

Thankyou to everyone for your support and cooperation so far.

Term 1 Learning Weeks 5-10

Literacy

Phonics

We are revising the letters previously taught. Our final focus letters are; x, q, y. We will have then taught all 26 alphabet sounds. In class, we are working towards developing confidence and automacy with recognising the letters in a range of fonts (including Victorian pre-cursive)

 Reading

We are working on saying the sounds and blending them together to read simple words like net, van, set. In class, we are up to teaching red sight words. The words we are reading are; no, what, long, an, has, as, if, so that.  We are also reviewing all golden words. If you could please continue to work with your child on the words in their individual folders, this will ensure they have a solid foundation of the words to assist in their future reading.

Syllables

The students have been engaged in a number of hands on  syllable activities. The ability to correctly break a word down into syllable chunks helps readers decode large or unfamiliar words. Breaking words into syllables can also help students with their spelling. Revise this skill at home with your child by saying words and asking your child to tell you how many syllables the word has. I.e. car/rot=2 syllables pear= 1 syllable  ba/na/na= 3 syllables.

Rhyme

Rhyming words end the same, they sound alike. Students have been working on rhyming games and activities such as matching rhyming pictures and spot the odd one out.

Numeracy

In numeracy the students continue to review numbers 1-10. Children are required to read and write these numbers as well as identify numbers that come before or after a given number. We have been focusing on teen numbers to 15.

Numero- the students will gradually be introduced to the fun maths game Numero. This game assists learning of mental maths strategies.

Websites to support home learning

We have had a number of parents asking for recommended educational websites. The following is a small selection that you may wish to view. The important thing to remember when engaging your child in any online game or app, is to sit with your child and participate with them. Use such resources as a learning opportunity.

Better Beginnings

Better Beginnings and the State Library of Western Australia provide access to a number of great online resources for kids.

These are free with your local WA public library card or State Library card!

Starfall

Some free games for letter sounds and simple texts to read. Some areas require a subscription.

ICT Games

Free literacy and numeracy games. Also available apps that can be purchased.

Handwashing

To assist the children in implementing healthy habits and in line with NQS all children must wash their hands before eating, as well as after toileting, coughing, sneezing or blowing noses. In addition to this we encourage you and your child to wash hands upon arrival to school.

On entry testing

All testing is now complete. You will receive the results of this assessment during parent interviews in week 10.

Sustainability and recycling

In conjunction with our school commitment to sustainability we have recycling drop points available to all families. The items that can be brought into school to be recycled include batteries, plastic lids, dried-up plastic pens and markers. Please drop these items in class.
